I took an interest in holly trees shortly after I moved to my new house in 2000. A 15ft common holly was already well established in the back garden. It added much interest to the back garden, which consisted of a lawn surrounded by connifers. In the autumn and winter the sight of the bottle green leaves and bright red berries on a white snow or frosty background was awesome.

I wanted to learn how to keep this holly full of berries. That's when I turned to the internet for some guideance and a whole new world opened up.I discovered that there was not just one variety of holly, but almost 400 varieties.Although red berries are the most common, hollies can also have yellow or orange berries. Leaves can be prickly or smooth and various shades of green. Varigated forms are tinged with yellow or cream.
